One agent can draft an article. An income stream needs a team: something that finds the work, something that does it, something that checks it, something that ships it, and something that keeps the books.

The orchestrator is what runs that team on a schedule, passes work between agents, stops when something breaks and asks you before anything risky happens.

This guide covers the patterns that work, compares six kinds of tools and walks through a build you can adapt to any stream in the Autonomous Income track.

Start simpler than you think

Both major agent-building guides give the same advice.

Anthropic recommends "finding the simplest solution possible, and only increasing complexity when needed" (Anthropic).

OpenAI recommends that you "maximize a single agent's capabilities first," because more agents add "complexity and overhead" (OpenAI).

In practice, most hands-off income streams are a fixed pipeline of focused agent steps, not a swarm of agents improvising together.

Predictable is good when you aren't watching.

Four patterns worth knowing

These pattern names come from Anthropic's and OpenAI's guides:

Pattern How it works Use it for
Prompt chaining (pipeline) Step A's output feeds step B, then C, with checks between Research → draft → check → publish
Evaluator-optimizer (checker loop) One call produces, another scores it against a rubric and sends it back for revision Your quality gate, in every build
Orchestrator-workers / manager A manager agent splits a job and hands pieces to specialist agents Large research tasks or multi-part products
Routing A classifier sends each item to the right specialist Support replies, lead scoring, content types

Our default for autonomous income: a scheduled pipeline, a checker loop at every quality-critical step, and a human approval step before anything public or financial.

The tools compared (comparison table)

Prices are list prices checked Oct 15, 2026. They change often, so verify before you buy.

Tool What it is Strengths Watch-outs Entry price
n8n Visual workflow builder with AI Agent nodes, code steps and MCP support; self-hostable Billed per full workflow run, not per step. Human approval for tool calls. Free self-hosted Community Edition Steeper learning curve. Self-hosting means you maintain the server Cloud Starter €20/mo billed annually (n8n)
Make Visual scenario builder with Make AI Agents Very visual. Large app library. Low entry price Billed per action (credits), so loops get expensive Core plan, check current price (Make)
Zapier The largest app-integration platform, with Zapier Agents Easiest setup. Connects to 9,000+ apps Per-task billing adds up. Agents are a separate add-on billed by "activities" Pro from $19.99/mo billed annually. Agents have a free tier (Zapier)
Lindy An AI "teammate" with scheduled routines, inbox and meeting skills Natural-language setup. Lindy says anything with outside impact waits for approval Credit-based. Better for operations than heavy data pipelines $49.99 per user/mo for 5,000 credits (Lindy)
CrewAI Open-source Python framework for role-based multi-agent "crews" and "flows," plus a hosted platform (AMP) Free MIT-licensed framework. Built for multi-agent designs Needs code (or a coding agent). You host and monitor it Framework free. AMP Basic free with 50 executions/mo (CrewAI)
Coding agents (Claude Code, OpenAI Codex and others) Agents that write, run and fix code for you Can build a custom pipeline exactly how you want it, plus tests and docs You own the code, hosting and security Claude Code included in Claude Pro ($20/mo) (Claude). Codex included in ChatGPT Plus ($20/mo) (OpenAI)
How to choose:5 items
  • Non-technical and want it working this week: Zapier, or Lindy for operations-style tasks
  • Comfortable with logic and want low run costs at volume: n8n (Cloud, or self-hosted later)
  • Visual thinker on a tight budget at low volume: Make
  • Want a true multi-agent design or custom logic: CrewAI, built and maintained with a coding agent
  • Have outgrown no-code: have a coding agent turn your proven workflow into a small script on a scheduler

Many builders mix them: n8n as the conveyor belt, a coding agent writing the custom steps, and an assistant plan for ad-hoc research.

Costs: monthly estimate for a three-agent pipeline

Our estimate for one stream running daily: signal, production and checker agents plus publishing and a ledger.

Item Est. monthly
Orchestrator (n8n Cloud Starter or Zapier Pro entry tier; $0 if self-hosted) $0–$30
Model API usage for three agents ~$10–$50 (our estimate)
Coding-agent plan (optional, for custom steps) $0–$20
Server for self-hosting (optional) ~$5–$20 (our estimate)
Storage and queue (Sheets or Airtable) $0–$20
Total ~$15–$140/month

Key takeaways

  • Start with a scheduled pipeline plus a checker loop. Add a manager agent only when one pipeline can't cope.
  • n8n, Make and Zapier are conveyor belts. Lindy is an approval-first teammate. CrewAI and coding agents give you custom multi-agent systems.
  • Budget about $15–$140/month (our estimate) for a three-agent pipeline.
  • Permissions, caps, logs and human approval are what make "hands-off" safe.
