Autonomous Income

Self-Making Products

How AI agents can create, list and market templates, prompts and guides, with the approvals and platform rules that matter.

No income claims: Nothing here promises or implies that you'll earn any particular amount, or anything at all. Most digital products sell few or no copies, and marketplaces are crowded.

Digital products suit agent-run income better than almost anything else: no inventory, no shipping, and every step from idea to listing is information work.

A well-built pipeline can research a gap, build the product, test it, write the listing, make the images, publish, promote and answer routine buyer questions.

Your role is the one marketplaces and buyers actually care about: deciding what's worth selling, confirming it works and standing behind it.

"Make themselves" is the goal for production. Quality control stays human.

What sells well when agents build it

Product type Why agents fit Watch out for
Spreadsheet tools (budgets, trackers, calculators) Coding agents write formulas and test them on sample data Broken formulas get bad reviews fast
Notion / Airtable templates Structured, documentable, easy to vary by niche Saturated generic niches. Go narrow
Automation blueprints (n8n or Make workflow files plus a setup guide) Agents can build and run the workflow to prove it works Platform updates break them, so plan updates
Practical guides and checklists Research plus drafting plus your expertise Thin, generic text, and AI disclosure rules
Prompt packs Easy to make Etsy prohibits selling AI prompt bundles on their own (Etsy). Sell them on your own store, bundled with a working tool or guide

The tool stack

  • Orchestrator: n8n or Make
  • Builder agents: a coding agent (Claude Code, included with Claude Pro at $20/mo, or OpenAI Codex, included with ChatGPT Plus at $20/mo) for spreadsheets, scripts and workflow files; any strong model for guides (Claude, OpenAI)
  • Storefronts: Gumroad, beehiiv digital products, Etsy, or your own Ghost or Stripe checkout
  • Design: your own screenshots plus a design tool for covers and mockups of the real product
  • Marketing: a newsletter, a Pinterest or social scheduler, and a blog post per product
  • Support: a help doc plus an agent that drafts replies for you to send

Monthly cost estimate

Our estimate for a catalog of 5 to 20 products. List prices and fees were checked on Oct 15, 2026. Verify them before you buy.

Item Est. monthly
Coding-agent or assistant plan $20
Orchestrator (n8n Starter €20/mo billed annually, or self-hosted) $0–$24
Model API usage for listings and marketing ~$5–$20 (our estimate)
Storefront $0 monthly on Gumroad or beehiiv Free
Etsy listing fees, if used ($0.20 per listing, renewed every 4 months) ~$1–$5
Design tool (optional) $0–$15
Total fixed ~$25–$85/month

Per-sale fees (not included above): Gumroad charges 10% + $0.50 on direct sales, or 30% on sales through its Discover marketplace (Gumroad).

Etsy charges a 6.5% transaction fee plus payment processing (3% + $0.25 in the U.S.) (Etsy).

Build these fees into your prices.

Risks and rules

  • Marketplace AI rules. Etsy requires AI disclosure and bans standalone prompt bundles. KDP requires AI disclosure and caps new titles. Read each platform's current rules before you automate listings, and re-read them quarterly.
  • Fake reviews. Never have an agent write reviews or testimonials. The FTC's rule prohibits fake reviews, including AI-generated reviews attributed to people who don't exist, and allows civil penalties for knowing violations (FTC).
  • Earnings claims in your marketing. If a product promises income ("this template will make you $X"), you need proof, and the FTC has gone after AI money-making claims (FTC). Sell what the product does, not what it might earn.
  • Copyright and trademarks. Purely AI-generated material may not be protected by copyright, while your human selection, arrangement and edits can be (U.S. Copyright Office). Don't copy other sellers' designs, and don't imply you're endorsed by the apps your templates run on.
  • Taxes. Digital sales can trigger sales tax or VAT. Check whether your platform handles it as merchant of record, and talk to a tax professional.
  • Saturation. Generic templates compete with thousands of others. Narrow niches, real testing and your own audience are the moat.

Key takeaways

  • Agents can run the whole line, research → spec → build → test → list → market → support, but you test, price and stand behind every product.
  • A separate tester agent plus your own hands-on check is what separates a product from AI clutter.
  • Follow each marketplace's AI rules: Etsy disclosure and no standalone prompt bundles; KDP disclosure and weekly limits.
  • Fixed costs can stay around $25–$85/month (our estimate), plus per-sale fees.
